Steel Moulds & Prototyping
While transforming Australian steel into tunnels, gantries, guardrails, towers, stairways and other projects may be our bread and butter, there are other ways we help clients’ ideas become reality. Such as our steel moulds.
Custom built steel moulds can be used to produce a variety of concrete applications. From concrete blocks to water troughs; from concrete planters to outdoor furniture. The only limit is your imagination.
We can help you with custom built steel moulds & drafting needs
Our experience, skills and professionalism in transforming steel means we can help you with all your steel moulding needs:
- Custom built steel moulds can be produced in our Melbourne factory and delivered to you anywhere in Australia.
- Steel moulds can be used for a variety of concrete applications. While the list is virtually endless, this includes concrete blocks, water troughs, planters, outdoor furniture such as benches and chairs, bollards and walls.
- Our steel moulds are designed to last the test of time.
If necessary, they can be used over and over and over to produce concrete products that are both consistent and accurate. - We can produce simple steel moulds, such as for the production of concrete slabs, right through to complex moulds for architectural features and one-off concrete installations.
- We can provide detailed drawings for you or work from drawings that you provide.
- We can produce steel moulds in all shapes and sizes.
Concrete is often described as solid, tough and durable, which is similar to how steel is described. Which is why concrete and steel can be a match made in heaven.

Steel Moulds & Prototyping FAQ
What is a mould prototype?
A mould prototype is an initial model or sample of a mould used to test and refine the steel design before full-scale production. It allows for evaluating the steel mould’s functionality, accuracy, and efficiency in producing the desired parts. Kelly Steel uses prototyping to ensure that our custom-built Australian steel moulds meet all specifications and requirements before proceeding with large-scale fabrication.
What is mould steel?
Mould steel refers to the specific type used to create moulds for casting and shaping other materials, such as concrete or plastic. This steel is chosen for its durability, strength, and resistance to wear, ensuring the mould can be used repeatedly without degrading. At Kelly Steel, we use high-quality Australian steel to fabricate moulds designed to last and perform reliably over numerous production cycles.
Once I have fabricated a mould and placed a request for moulded parts, how long does it take to mould them?
The time required to mould parts after fabricating the mould can vary based on their complexity and size, as well as the production volume requested. Generally, once the mould is ready and set up for production, the process of moulding parts can begin immediately and is typically completed within a few days to a week. We aim to provide efficient turnaround times to meet your production schedules.
How many parts can be moulded daily from a single cavity prototype mould?
The number of parts that can be moulded from a single cavity prototype mould per day depends on the mould’s design, the mould material, and the production process used. On average, a well-designed single cavity mould can produce several dozen to hundreds of parts daily, depending on each part’s cycle time and complexity. Kelly Steel optimises our mould designs and production processes to maximise efficiency and output while maintaining high-quality standards.
