Custom Steel Fabrication

Not every project fits a standard spec. When you need a one-off component, a bespoke architectural feature, or a prototype that doesn’t exist in a catalogue, Kelly Steel designs and fabricates it from scratch to your brief, your drawings, or a concept we help you develop.

As one of Melbourne’s established steel fabricators, we handle custom work across commercial, industrial and residential projects. From our 2,000 m² Dandenong South facility, we take a job from concept through to a finished, certified component no matter how unusual the brief.

What is Custom Steel Fabrication?

Custom steel fabrication is the design and manufacture of a steel component built to a unique specification, rather than a standard structural, framing, or catalogue item. It covers everything from a single bespoke bracket to a full architectural feature or a prototype ahead of a production run.

Where structural and framing work follows a fixed engineering spec, custom fabrication starts with a brief drawing, a sketch, or sometimes just a description of what you’re trying to achieve. Our in-house design and drafting team turns that into a fabrication-ready plan before any steel is cut.

Our custom fabrication process typically covers:

1

Brief & design consultation

Understanding what you need and why.

2

Design & drafting

Turning a concept or rough drawing into fabrication-ready plans (see Design & Drafting).

3

Material sourcing

Selecting the right steel grade and finish for the application.

4

Cutting, forming & welding

CNC cutting, forming and welding by trade-qualified fabricators.

5

Trial fit & QA

Checking tolerances, alignment and finish before sign-off.

6

Finishing & coatings

Galvanising or paint systems to suit the environment.

7

Delivery & installation

Packed, delivered and installed on your schedule (see Installation).

Who does it?

Workshop capability (Dandenong)

Custom work is carried out by the same trade-qualified fabricators and coded welders who deliver our structural and industrial projects, supported by in-house design and drafting. Where a job calls for it, we work to AS/NZS 5131, AS 4100 and AS/NZS 1554, with full QA documentation custom doesn’t mean informal.

Our south-east facility is set up for both production runs and one-off jobs. That flexibility matters for custom work: a single prototype or a short run of bespoke components needs the same attention to tolerance and finish as a full structural package, without the lead times a larger fabricator might quote for a small job.

What we build

Our team also supports steel moulds and prototyping for clients developing a new product or component ahead of a production run, and can fabricate custom residential steel for builders after something beyond a standard staircase or balustrade.

Design & drafting for custom work

Most custom jobs start without a finished engineering drawing. Our in-house design and drafting team can work from a rough sketch, a photo of an existing feature, or a verbal brief, and develop it into a fabrication-ready drawing checking material choice, weld points and finish before anything goes to the workshop floor. If you already have drawings or a 3D model, we work directly from those instead.

QA, standards and documentation

Custom doesn’t mean unregulated. Depending on the application, our fabrication is delivered to AS/NZS 5131 and AS 4100, with welding to AS/NZS 1554 by qualified, coded welders. Every job includes the documentation appropriate to its use, material certificates, weld maps, and inspection records for anything feeding into a certified structural or commercial application. Our fabrication practices are recognised through our ISO 9001 certification and membership of the Australian Steel Institute and Steel Sustainability Australia see our full Accreditation page for details.

We deliver custom steel fabrication across Greater Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and regional Victoria, from a single Dandenong South workshop. Whether it’s a one-off feature for a CBD retail fit-out or a bespoke component for a regional industrial site, we scope the job, confirm the brief, and fabricate to suit your timeline.

FAQs about Custom Steel Fabrication

Structural fabrication follows an engineer’s spec for a standard building component beams, columns, bracing. Custom fabrication covers anything built to a unique brief instead: one-off features, bespoke fixtures, prototypes or non-standard pieces that don’t fit a catalogue spec.

Yes. Our in-house design and drafting team can work from a sketch, photo reference or verbal brief and develop it into a fabrication-ready drawing before we start cutting.

Both. Our Dandenong workshop is set up to handle a single prototype or bespoke item as readily as a longer production run.

Commercial, industrial and residential clients across Melbourne and Victoria, including retail fit-outs, plant and equipment fixtures, architectural features, and residential staircases and balustrades.

We work with a range of steel grades and finishes, including galvanising and paint systems, selected to suit the application and environment.

We take on jobs of all sizes from a single bespoke bracket through to larger architectural or industrial features.

Both options work. If you have drawings or a 3D model, we fabricate directly from those. If not, our design and drafting team develops the plans with you first.

Turnaround depends on complexity and material availability. We’ll confirm a timeline once we’ve scoped the brief and design.

We can manage the full process fabrication, delivery and installation or fabricate only if you have your own installation team.

Send us your drawings, a sketch, or a description of what you need, along with your timeline. We’ll scope the job and come back with a quote.
